There is a kind of resilience required to spend 24 or 48 hours never quite knowing what the next minute will ask of you.

Firefighters live in that space.

They eat—but listen for the tones.

They sleep—but know the alarm could wake them at any moment.

They laugh around the kitchen table, clean the station, train, finish reports, call home, and move through the ordinary rhythms of a shift—

all while knowing that ordinary can disappear in seconds.

The tones drop.

And they go.

They don’t know if they’re heading to a fire, a wreck, a medical emergency, a child who can’t breathe, someone’s worst moment, or a call that will stay with them long after the shift ends.

They just know someone needs help.

So they get up.

Again.

At 2 in the afternoon.

At 2 in the morning.

After they just sat down to eat.

After they finally fell asleep.

After a difficult call they haven’t even had time to process.

And I think sometimes we underestimate the resilience that requires.

Because it isn’t only the physical demands of the job.

It’s living at the ready.

It’s going from asleep to needed in seconds.

From laughter to urgency.

From an ordinary moment to chaos.

And then, somehow, coming back to the station and trying to settle your nervous system enough to eat the reheated dinner, finish the report, close your eyes again, or laugh with your crew—

knowing the tones could drop again before you do.

There is strength in running toward the emergency.

✨But there is another kind of strength in spending 24 or 48 hours prepared to do it over and over again.✨

To our firefighters:

We see the calls you answer.

But we also see the hours between them.

The interrupted sleep.

The constant readiness.

The adrenaline.

The exhaustion.

The uncertainty of never knowing what will come through those speakers next.

And still—

when the tones drop,

you rise.

You gear up.

You go.
